Project Description

Yawkey Gallery on the Charles River

About the Exhibit

Yawkey Gallery on the Charles River is the most centrally located permanent exhibition at the Museum of Science, Boston. We worked with the exhibit development team to create an exhibition that highlights how the engineered and natural worlds are intertwined. Visitors engage with hands-on, water-based, interactives, and also practice their observations skills while looking out the three story windows onto the Charles River, and at aquaria featuring river animals.

River Simulation

Engineering in a River System is a 2016 American Alliance of Museums, MUSE award winning interactive about trade-off in an highly engineered river system. This interactive is part of the Yawkey Gallery on the Charles River at the Museum of Science, Boston. Working with the exhibit development team and fabricators this 24 foot table comes to life by projected animations on this tactile surface. Each of the five stations use playful animations to teach about dams, pesticides, fish ladders, runoff, and sewer overflow.

This interactive was created using Unity, and uses custom built projection mapping and alignment tools. At each station there are 3D printed pieces with embedded RFID tags. Arduino microcontrollers were used to detect when each piece was inserted.
